the building

A converted former Highland Railway station adjacent to the existing railway station in Newtonmore.

The station was built in 1893 in a beautiful Victorian style and is now a listed building. It replaced the original wooden building (built when the railway was constructed in 1865), which was burnt down by a spark from a passing steam train.

Now as an unstaffed halt, it is a quiet single line on the national rail network; North to Aviemore and Inverness, south to Perth, Edinburgh, Glasgow and beyond, with approximately 4 trains stopping each way daily (including the Caledonian Sleeper direct to and from London, Euston) with little or nothing after 10.00 pm.

A must for railway enthusiasts where rail excursions on this highly scenic line are immediately available.  The entrance to the platform now is beside the Old Station building.

The Old Station is in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park in the Highlands of Scotland looking over the beautiful Spey Valley, bordered on one side by the Cairngorm mountain range and the Monadhliath range on the other.
